Building Cultural Bridges Programme

The Building Cultural Bridges Programme is an Intergenerational and Cross-community Programme, delivered by Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency, funded by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme & managed by the Executive Office.

The programme was designed to improve communications among communities, so they were brought together initially as small groups, they had the opportunity to engage in team building activities followed by a creative art session using the Belfast Flags of Hope Model, allowing participants to get to know each other and feel comfortable together.   We then introduced iPads as a communication tool, learning how to face-time, skype and then e-twinning pairs.

The small groups had several opportunities to come together as a larger group when we visited Cultural Heritage Sites of interest to both sides of the community. The programme finished with a cross community, intergenerational ‘Celebration of Success’ event in the WIN Business Park, Newry, where participants were awarded with Certificates while the younger generation played music and enjoyed making jumping clay models with Mickey Mouse making a guest appearance.

Pauline Coghlan programme manager said “Our aim was to bring people together to learn IT skills while providing an opportunity to meet new people and explore our joint heritage and culture. All of the participants gave very positive feedback and we had a great turnout on the day, I think we have achieved what we set out to do”.
